Health & Safety Management
Modern safety
management is very different from the traditional "wait
and see" approach, whereby action was generally responsive
to occupationally related accidents, injuries and ill-health.
Although ACS offer a range of individual
health and safety monitoring and assessment services,
it is important to realise that 'safety management' is
not purely an ad-hoc issue but should be inherent in all
areas of an organisation. However, with the current large
number of regulations in place, and a situation which
is continually developing and changing, it is often difficult
for employers / managers to keep abreast of responsibilities
without devoting significant resources to the task.
An effective method of managing these
areas is to operate a Health and Safety Management System.
This service offered by ACS is basically a structured,
formalised and documented approach to developing a positive
health and safety culture within an organisation and ensuring
on-going compliance with the law and "good practice".
Typically, this is based around a centralised 'Control
Manual' which sets out a documented approach to implementing
all of an organisation's policies and procedures while
ensuring legal compliance. This is supplemented by the
undertaking of specific assessments and monitoring, where
required, in accordance with the policies in the manual.
Alternatively, if an organisation already
has in-house policies and procedures in place, ACS are
able to offer an Audit, Assessment, Inspection and Review
service. This assesses the safety performance of a firm
with regard to legal compliance, or conformance with in-house
policies. Health and Safety Management support packages
are also available. These fixed term packages may be tailored
to best suit clients' needs but generally include a selection
of audits, assessments, documentation preparation and
training. Clients initially choose the number of consultancy
days that they require on an annual basis and then dictate
how they would like this time to be spent.
ACS have a vast amount of experience
within the area of Health and Safety Management. This
includes providing health and safety support to over 160
housing organisations through their relationship with
Employers in Voluntary Housing (EVH). Also, assisting
a number of Higher and Further Education establishments,
Local Authorities and a range of industrial and commercial
clients to implement health and safety management systems.
